M&D arrived the same day that we finally got our Qatar Distribution Centre (QDC) card. It took three tries to get the right information on the letter and after a 1,000 QR deposit - I had my card. Serious business this card and the whole QDC experience - it has my name and picture on it and Casey can only go if I am there. There is a magnetic stripe that tracks how much I spend against my balance which is pre-determined based on the information in the letter. The letter has to come from my work, be signed by either a "Head" or "Manager" of HR, include salary information, whether or not we have a living allowance and my martial status. The form that you have to complete at QDC also asks for your religion...scary.
But once inside, it was just like a Crowfoot Liquor. Prices were high, but not the astronomical I was expecting. The selection was also better than we expected, although it is still not near what we have back home. But considering it is a liquor store in a country where alcohol is illegal - it was very good! There are lots of wines and spirits and most of the major beer brands.
After dinner and catching up with M&D and hearing about their adventures in the UK and France, they retired to their room, recently outfitted with some second hand furniture I bought off a co-worker...
Then next was general touring around Doha. The traffic pretty much tripled overnight as the same day that they arrived also happened to be the day all the teachers and schools went back. We didn't expect the traffic explosion and as such, we spent a bit too much time in the car stuck in traffic some days!
The next day we went back to Fuwairit beach for another bbq - we don't really know of any other beaches so we had to do a repeat - but it was still nice although the beach was so deserted it was almost eerie.
